Resource Spotlight: Produce Safety in Hydroponic and Aquaponic Operations

Mon, Apr 15th, 2024, created by Beth Scheckelhoff
Have you been looking for a grower-friendly guide to better understand and incorporate produce safety practices in your operation? Look no further! The Northeast Center to Advance Food Safety recently released an online resource guide covering produce safety topics for hydroponic and aquaponic growers. The resource can be viewed online or downloaded as a pdf file.

The guide provides information on nutrient solution and production water quality, cleaning and sanitizing, harvest and postharvest handling, personal health and hygiene, wildlife and domesticated animals, audits, and issues specific to aquaponic operations. Each section also includes links to additional resources for review.

Growers can also watch a case study of videos highlighting produce safety topics put into practice at Legacy Growers Indoor Hydroponic Farm in Tallahassee, FL.

The Northeast Center to Advance Food Safety (NECAFS) is a USDA-funded regional center that coordinates training, education, and outreach on the FSMA Produce Safety Rule and Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule.
